About

About Dr. Johnny K. Wong

Many people come to therapy feeling caught between what their family expects and what they want for themselves. Making sense of that space, with care and without judgment, is the heart of my work.

Who I work with

I'm a second-generation Chinese-American psychologist with over ten years of experience helping adults, couples, and families navigate relationship challenges, family conflict, and life transitions.

I specialize in working with Asian American and second-generation clients, especially high-achieving individuals facing family pressure, intergenerational differences, and the complexities of bicultural identity. I also support adults who are children of immigrants who feel caught between cultures, including navigating communication gaps with parents, balancing personal goals with family expectations, and finding peace within oneself.

Alongside this, I work with people experiencing anxiety, burnout, depression, grief, career questions, and the stress that builds in demanding lives. Cultural understanding shapes everything I do, and clients from every background are welcome.

My approach

My style is warm, collaborative, and insight-oriented. I take time to understand your experiences, values, and relationships, while helping you recognize patterns that may be holding you back. Together, we'll build on your strengths, deepen self-understanding, and support you in making meaningful, lasting changes in your life and relationships.

I aim to create a culturally safe space where you can feel truly seen and understood, allowing you to move toward the kind of relationships and life that feel more grounded and fulfilling. My work draws on psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, attachment-based, and relational approaches, adapted to what you need rather than a single formula.

Working with couples and families

Partners often arrive at a crossroads: communication has broken down, old patterns keep repeating, or differences in culture, family, and expectations feel harder to bridge than they once did. In couples work, we slow those conversations down, understand what each person is really asking for, and practice honest repair.

With families, I help members across generations hear one another, including parents and adult children who love each other but struggle to communicate. Sessions are available in English and Cantonese.

Training and background

I earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Long Island University – Brooklyn and an MA in Mental Health Counseling from Brooklyn College. My doctoral research on filial piety deepened my understanding of family dynamics and informs my work with cultural identity, relationships, and intergenerational patterns.

I am a licensed psychologist in New York State (License #028184) and provide secure virtual therapy with flexible scheduling, including evenings, to support busy professionals in finding care that fits their lives.
